Spot on Sir Alf
Thats my worry too,in the Summer Sam shouldnt have agreed to this "attractive football" mandate as G&S went ahead and bought players that dont fit the system where Sam can get results, they should have backed him as was and got players in to suit his system...or sacked him

We simply had players that could not pass the ball and part of that is that we hold onto it too long because the movement across the team is not there. Cole cannot control it, Vaz Te could not pass it and in central midfield there is over reliance on Noble who does not move the ball on quickly enough. Is it down to Noble or lack of movement and passing options? Bit of both IMHO. Which means it is as much, if not more, about training ground drills and routines, tactics, formations and roles. That is the manager's responsibility.
The modern game, as Germany showed, is now about moving the ball on fast supported by lots of movement in midfield and by full backs in addition to strikers (the whole team), players with good technical ability and able to pass and control at pace.
I think we have players that can play more like that but not the managerial set up / know how to play that way.

Totally spot on. I have trouble wondering how two businessmen who have made so much money can be utterly useless when it comes to the manager.

no splat, good post
I think it's more the combined pay off of all the walrus's coaching team and hangers on that's been the problem. probably a few million on top of what it would cost to sack him. maybe im wrong and he hasn't got that many staff and it was purely gold & brady who overruled sullivan, but didn't sullivan in that chat with the fellas from that other west ham site say before the season ended that he couldn't pay him off? it's all a massive fuck up and we should have got rid of the cunt

Wrighty, I agree , and that's why zarate looked so poor , he was dropping deeper and deeper to get the ball. Against palace he was playing in their half, yesterday he was playing more and more in our half. But the problem started in defence as time and time again they won the ball and gave it straight back tonsouthampton.

Whilst the manager should take a lot of the flak for the debacle ie playing Vaz te and cole . Some of the players should also take a long hard look at themselves as well. Reid was appalling and looks like he's already left the club, noble , despite his goal passed to the opposition more than he did his own players. The whole team for the was they marked on set plays. Morrison looked dis interested when he came on as well.
Overall the manager deserves the slagging he's getting but some of those players should not be able to get away for their shit performances either.

We didn't go long but without movement going short is a worse option. There wasn't any movement which forced the midfield to keep hold of the ball longer than they needed to.

I agree, Cough. It wasn't direct but whatever it was didn't work.
We were everything we were last year minus the long punts upfield (for the most part) Slow, laborious, clueless and without any cutting edge.
So does Sam stick with this new approach to prove a point or does he revert back to what he knows best? Either way he risks losing his job if the owners are to be believed.
The only spanner in the works is that we now have a set of attacking players that are square pegs in round holes if he does decide to revert back to direct football. Valencia and Zarate in particular.

The problem as we all suspected but now know is that the owners are asking the manager to get results but not using his tried and tested system. Players bought are not ones to fit that system. So its like buying a formula 1 car for a motocross race.
Yesterday, Southampton's system of pass and move, possession based football with lots of movement was seen to run rings around our team. All members of their team were moving, they are instructed to move the ball on in 1 or 2 seconds and to get it back asap when out of possession.
Us? BFS only knows the direct approach, to a big target man, and then win the knock downs or "second phase". The rest of the system is based on defending deep in numbers etc...
BFS and the new style mandate are incompatible. Its as simple as that. G & S messed up :-(

Fc, I didn't think we did . We did try and pass it through midfield , unfortunately our midfield were incapable of passing the ball to their own team mates.

Good article, flying V.
Demanding the most 'direct' manager of the last 15 years to suddenly change his whole footballing Outlook, and then trying to graft South American ball-players onto his direct tactics is asking for the mess you got yesterday, in my opinion.

It's a very good opening post V.
The problem with Sullivan and Gold isn't their lack of commitment or unwillingness to spend, it's simply that they're not very good at their jobs. They definitely love the club, they're just very shit at what they do. Their record as chairmen pretty much illustrates that. Both at Birmingham and now with us.

There is no way to get our message across to the board. 80% wanted him out, and they kept him. 44% odd didn't want the new badge, they changed it slightly and went with it anyway.
Had a quick look at the stars from last season and this in the league:
P 41 W 12 29% win ratio
P 21 at home, W 7. 33% win ratio
How has this cunt not been sacked?

We will have to wait until we see the team for the Hull game.
I assume Song will be playing, Jarvis, Jenkinson and Sakho and/or Valencia.
If we are shit in that game I suggest it may be time to panic.

North bank, erm where did I say he has? I just pointed out that it wasn't the same starting 11 as three new signings started the game. I'm not sure why that should be up for debate as it's a fact.

They're not, but it's pretty much the same team that unspectacularly got promoted, in our third season since promotion he's hardly progressed the team

chelmsford we've hardly evolved though have we, 3 seasons after our promotion and 6 of the 10 starting outfield players yesterday were regulars in the side that came third in the Championship.
